Bigbury is a picturesque parish in the South Hams, uniquely defined by the meeting of rolling countryside and a dramatic coastline. While shaped by farming and a close-knit community, the area is most renowned for its spectacular maritime environment, featuring expansive beaches and the winding beauty of the Avon Estuary. This coastal landscape is significant in that it sits within the protected South Devon National Landscape, offering some of the most iconic seascapes in the Southwest.

The Shores of Bigbury Bay

The parish is a premier destination for those drawn to the water. Bigbury-on-Sea celebrated for its sweeping sandy beaches and the famous tidal causeway that links the mainland to Burgh Island. At low tide, the golden sands stretch out to meet the island, while at high tide, the beach is transformed by the incoming Atlantic. Nearby Challaborough offers further coastal charm, tucked into the rugged cliffs of the bay.

The Avon Estuary and Panoramic Vistas

Beyond the surf, the Avon Estuary provides a serene contrast, where tidal waters meander through lush greenery, creating a haven for wildlife and walkers alike. The local 18-hole golf course is famed for its “bird’s-eye” perspective, offering panoramic views where the river meets the sea. From these heights, one can survey the full majesty of Bigbury Bay, spanning from the rugged headland of Bolt Tail in the east to Stoke Point in the west.

Settlement and Community

While the coast draws the eye, the parish is anchored by three distinct settlements:

• St Ann’s Chapel: A central hub featuring a 13th-century inn, a community shop, Bigbury Memorial Hall, play park and a sports field.
• Bigbury Village: An inland retreat centred around the historic St Lawrence’s Church and the traditional village green the focus of carols at Christmas.
• Bigbury-on-Sea: The coastal heart of the parish, defined by its connection to the sea and the iconic Art Deco hotel on Burgh Island.
